Dietary phosphatidylcholine requirements in larval and postlarval Penaeus japonicus Bate OMA
Camara, M.R.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Three nutritional experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine (PC) on the growth (length, weight, and metamorphosis) and survival (rearing and stress) of larval and postlarval Penaeus japonicus Bate. Purified soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC, 95% purity), hen-egg PC (EPC, 94% purity), and de-oiled soybean lecithin (DSL, PC 23% purity) were used as sources of dietary PC. The results indicated that optimal metamorphosis in larval P. japonicus was obtained at levels of 15-30 g kg-1 of dietary SPC. Feeding trials with postlarval P. japonicus showed that low levels of dietary SPC (15 g kg-1) were more beneficial than...

Effect of dietary phospholipid on requirements for and incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids in postlarval Penaeus japonicus Bate OMA
Kontara, E.K.M.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Penaeus japonicus postlarvae were fed three dietary levels of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) (0, 0.5 and 1%) with or without 1.5% soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC; 95% purity). The experiment was conducted during two successive phases of 20 days starting with 12-day-old postlarvae. Supplying 1.5% of SPC and 1% n-3 HUFA in the diet significantly improved the growth, survival and resistance to osmotic stress of postlarvae compared to those fed phosphatidylcholine (PC)-free and HUFA-free diets, respectively. A significant interaction between dietary SPC and n-3 HUFA was only found for their effect on resistance to osmotic stress. A significant drop in stress sensitivity was obtained in the PC-deprived shrimp...

The effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine in postlarval penaeid shrimp: 2. Preliminary culture results OMA
Tackaert, W.; Camara, M.R.; Sorgeloos, P..
Although dietary phospholipids (PL) and particularly phosphatidylcholine (PC) have been found to enhance growth and survival in penaeid shrimp, precise requirements have yet to be established. Substantially variable responses of feeding PL have been noticed in crustaceans in relation to the growth stage of the animals and the composition of the other dietary ingredients. In several shrimp feeding trials phospholipids of unspecified composition, have been used, such as crude lecithin, as a result of which it is difficult to draw conclusions with regard to the optimal levels/types of dietary PL required by penaeid shrimp. This paper is part of a broad study which aims to assess the dietary effect of different levels/types of purified PL in marine fish and...
